In The Pipeline: Comics [Sept - Oct]

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 30, 2007 by mdjasrie

Im not really a big fan of superhero comics like spiderman, or batman. But there are a few worthy titles that im collecting right now.

Runaways [Volume 3 of ~]

I collect Runaways when they have compiled into one thick, hardcover volume. Its much more worth it that way and the printing is really neat and huge. Just bought volume 3 early this month and its a fantastic series to collect. Ill buy the next one as soon as it has been released (Don’t know when), without delay. The cliffhanger is somewhat unbearable.

Y The Last Man [Volumes 9 of 10]

The release date of the last volume is still unknown but as soon as its out, Y The Last Man would officially be the first comic book title to complete its collection. Overall, its been a thrilling ride and I cant wait for Hollywood to make a movie out of it.

100 Bullets [Volumes 2 of ~]

Im putting this into a semi hiatus state. I already have 2 volumes and about more than 10 have been released so far. Im really lagging behind in this comic book title. The reason being im still mulling over whether i should continue this series or not. Its not that i hate the story, its just that the whole noir, crime and violence atmostphere is wearing me down, especially when there are soo many plotlines taking place at once and they intertwine each other. At the rate im collecting, you tend to forget essential plotlines from the previous volume, resulting in rereading it again and somehow, im not connecting to the characters or the story at all thus far. Only time will tell.

In The Pipeline: Manga [Sept - Oct]

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on August 29, 2007 by mdjasrie

So its been almost 9 months since I started collecting mangas. I currently collecting the following series:

Fruits Basket [7 of 23]

I’m currently at Volume 7 and of all the series im collecting, this is at the forefront. Ill be investing more heavily on Fruits Basket over the next two months. Ill probably buy 2 or 3 volumes more. The latest arrival this month was volume 5 to 7. One of the more enjoyable series to collect.

Death Note [12 of 12] ~COMPLETE~

Ive just bought my final 3 volumes last week, thus completing the entire 12 volume series. A special volume 13 will be released sometime January next year i heard. Gotta keep an eye on that. Death Note would officially be the first manga title to complete its collection.

Bleach [ 7 of ~]

My collection of Bleach Manga has been slowing down. I think its been 2 or 3 months since i last bought it. I’ll probably buy 1 or 2 more over the coming months to expand the collection. Its been slow, but ive got other series to consider.

NaNa [1 of ~]

This series would be on hiatus at the moment. Ive only bought the first volume. A total of 6 have been released by Viz so far, but apparently, the release schedule are awefully long. So in this case, ill put this title on a low priority status. Ill focus on other titles for the time being.

Ouran High School Host Club [2 of ~]

This is the latest title that im collecting. Im collecting my own local version of the english manga, by Chuang Yi publishing. So far im very impressed by the overall quality of the translations as well as the paper used for publishing. And its pretty cheap too. I might give this title more support for the next two months. Ive already collecting volumes 1 and 2.

Ill be starting my collection on these 2 titles.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist

Again, ill be collecting the Chuang Yi version, because its cheap and good! I expect the manga to be real good and would definitely be following this series closely. I cant afford to buy anymore of those American imports, with the blockbuster title Fruits Basket and the never-ending Bleach manga, im glad Chuang Yi at least have the english translation to Fullmetal Alchemist manga for the local market.

2. Vagabond [1 of ~]

I was going through some scanlations, or rather, scouting for manga titles to collect, when i came across Vagabond. It was good. I really like those large 2 page panel drawings. Really detailed, really raw in the art. And i noticed that (again money issues) Chuang Yi had the rights to translate it to english for the local market. Double whammy! I’ll be starting on this soon too.

Kino’s Figure!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on August 28, 2007 by mdjasrie

Seeing is believing indeed! I’ve never thought that i would easily fall in love with another figurine after Blood+. Seeing Kino’s figure from the popular Kino no Tabi anime series, i was ecstatic! (and a little worried that i might blow huge chunks of cash on PVC)

Came across Clockwordmanchina’s entry whilst digging deep into the blogosphere, till i saw it. Behold!

Judging from the images above, id say its a fine piece of work. The base and the smoke from the gun really added a nice finishing touch to the entire figure. The detail is there, from the gun, to the individual pouches hung on her belt. The pose isnt really striking, but its just perfect for her character, an air of calm demeanor. Should i buy or should i not? Darn!

One Liter of Tears (Aya’s Diary)

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on August 27, 2007 by mdjasrie

I finally found the book that i’ve been searching for months. Deep inside the Japanese section of the Kinokuniya Bookstore at Takashimaya, I found the translated version of Aya’s Diary.

Some of you may be familiar with the hit J-Dorama, One Liter of Tears, which accounts the life of a young girl, Aya Kito who suffered from spinocerabellar ataxia, a degenerative disease of the nervous system, and how she struggles daily to live her life to fullest to the very end till she passed away. A very heartwarming, yet heartbreaking story, as she accounts how her family cope with her disease and seeing them supporting her brightest daughter till the very end.

Aya Kito also wrote a diary accounting her personal life. Her diary was published by her mother and now i had the opportunity to read it in my own native language. Truly, anyone who have watched the drama series, would agree with me how blessed we are where our health is concerned. Looking back, it really made us realize the fragility of life and that some people can really find hope and comfort even in the grimmest of circumstances. Her positive outlook in life despite her condition would probably be why the majority who watched the series felt deeply touched by her courage.

To those who are a true fan of the series, its highly recommended to get a copy of this book at Kinokuniya.

Ratatouille… A fine dining experience at the theaters.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 26, 2007 by mdjasrie

So i just came back from a screening of Pixar’s latest animation film, Ratatouille and i must say its a fine dining experience at the theaters. Almost all the elements that makes up the story were well done and somehow it feels kinda refreshing, despite knowing that Pixar’s film somehow uses the same success formula applied in previous films.

Before this movie came out, not much of the plot were given away judging from the trailers and such. I even had some reservations on whether this would be another Pixar hit or the first ever flop for the company. But it was the former that reigned champion. To keep it short i shall not spoil the story for you to those who havent seen it, but all i can say is that as with other previous films, Ratatouille is highly original, highly unique. Combining the elements of a rat who can cook like top rated chef, while at the same time trying to overcome constraints and challenges added a slew of original humour that can only be found in this film. I can assure you that by watching this film, you’ll be in for a few good laughs.

On a more technical side, the characters are really well done and varied. Ive never seen CG characters look so dynamic before, and as always, with the advent of better computer technologies, Pixar is constantly at the forefront in breaking the boundaries at what CG animation can or cannot do. You’ve seen how toys being animated in Toy Story, insects in A Bug’s Life, fishes that behaved realistically in Finding Nemo. Ratatouille is no exception either.

For those who have yet to watch, i highly recommend watching in digital format, as it really brings out the vibrancy of this film. And do come early for the movie as well, because Pixar has come out with another hilarious short film just before the main movie. No, its not about a bunch birds on the electric cable this time. This time is about alien abduction gone horribly wrong!

Spring Cleaning…. sort of….

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 26, 2007 by mdjasrie

On friday, i had the sudden urge to clean up my wardrobe. Not the clothes, but the immense number of books and textbooks above my wardrobe. So much mess on top of it that it almost looked like a mini attic.

There were tons of books, from my dad’s management books, to children books that ive keep for some unknown reason, to even my secondary school textbooks. I dunno why i still keep it. I though that it might come in handy one day when i got to poly, but it had proven otherwise. I had all the subjects’ textbooks all rotting up there.

So i started sifting out the books that were useful to those that were considered junk. This was the result after an hour of filtering.

All those books piled up! Gosh! It was not until i actually cleared it up, did i realise i actually kept that much junk! Even the ten year series from almost every subject can been seen from the image above! There were even children’s science and fact books that i still kept all those years. Well they arent useful now.

Throughout the process i was pleasantly surprised to find some sentimental items that i thought i had lost them forever. The first item that i came across was this dreadful 10 year series O-level maths book. I decided to keep that. In it however, contained a drawing, or a series of drawings on almost every page of the book that my best friend drew. He drew it such that if you were to flip the pages of the book rapidly, you can actually see a small animation taking place. I considered that a true work of art done by him, no matter how amateur looking it was. It brought back good memories during my secondary school days.

Another item i came across was a photograph taken of our class as a whole during our trip to Malacca for a geography field trip. It was during secondary 2. It was a great photograph that i thought it been had lost forever.  Other items include birthday cards from my friends that i still kept it, and an inspirational message from our math teacher.

Now, our math teacher wasnt exactly our favourite, but she was the single most important teacher for me. She was the one that brought my F9 math grade that i got in secondary 3, to an unexpected B4 grade for my O-levels. I really couldnt believe it. All those practice and scoldings I got from her it really paid off. Seeing this kinda makes me sad, because i dont really remember a moment where i actually thanked her sincerely for her efforts. I think she is still teaching at the same school. Nevertheless, whereever you are Mrs Ho, whether you read this or not, THANK YOU.

So i cleared all the books from up there, gave it an antiseptic clean using Dettol, and even gave a general wipe to all those books that would be placed back then. It looks soo much better now… and lots of extra space too!

The Secret

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on August 24, 2007 by mdjasrie

A couple of packages arrived from Amazon today, a few mangas that i ordered recently, a DVD which my mum ordered and a couple of books for my dad. The DVD was of particular interest to me. Entitled The Secret and its not really a movie, more like a self-help DVD but even then its a gross understatement.

What Is The Secret

Its very hard to explain what it is all about, but if you want to change your life for the better, i guess you have to check this out, as explaining it wont do justice.

Anyway, im not here to talk about The Secret, but rather apply it right here as a first step to see how much it can really change my life from then on. So im going to begin by releasing all the “positive energies”.

* I’m grateful for:*

All the things my parents have done for me.

All the sacrifices my parents have done for me to have a wonderful and comfortable life.

My friends past and present, who have made a tremendous impact on my life, for truly they are the greatest companions outside my family.

The things that i received, for which that im most grateful.

The happiness that i experience, from my family and my friends.

The dreams that have been realized, my goals that have been achieved, and the life that i truly deserve.

Having a positive perspective in life, and grateful for being who I am right now.

Being healthy and whole.

Hare Hare Yukai Madness!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on August 22, 2007 by mdjasrie

You know after all the “hoo-haa” thats going on around Odex and the anime community in Singapore, i must admit that even an anime freak like me must come to understand and stand up for my actions for once. Yes i admit that ive been downloading anime for the past 4 years and with this saga continuing, it got me thinking: What have i done to give back to the anime industry itself? At least on a personal level, thinking of those anime that i downloaded, it must be Karma acting up again and slapping me with the dreadful Odex letter a month back.

Now im not saying that i would start to support Odex now that ive got the short end of the stick, nor will i ever support them in the future, but hey, there must be other ways in which you can support the anime industry without going through Odex. Nor am i saying that im completely adhering to the binding regulations set by them. If you cant break the rules, bend them. Its still a risk im willing to take at least when it comes to previewing upcoming animes in the future (where unlicensed animes are concerned). It will get harder, relying more on my intuition than ever, doing lots of research on its background and so forth. It might be easier if they originate from works of manga, since i could potentially get a lot of material ahead of the anime releases (aka: Scanlations). Since it is quite well known (and often disputed) that fansubs are the ones that creates an awareness on a particular series, and having gray areas in the copyright laws at least leaves room for exploration.

So to correct my karma imbalances, my first step started a week ago, getting the authentic Blood+ figurine, which deserves my money personally. Now that has been settled, ive set my targets on the cult-status, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi anime.

Im getting crazy about the song Hare Hare Yukai, the ending song for the series. It all started out when i was surfing around Youtube when i came across music samples from the series’s character CDs. I had no idea what it contained inside, till i discovered that there were a total of 9 CDs, each for representing a certain character. I got the following image from this blog. Its an impressive collection i must say!

I then noticed that the seiyus each have their own rendition of Hare Hare Yukai song and each of them have distinctly different lyrics depending on the character’s background. I started sampling Kyon’s track and that’s when i started laughing at his rendition. Sarcastic, uninterested tones in the music just added to the hilarity to the already hilarious lyrics. I got so addicted to the song that i might purchase the CD after all.

Since i only liked Kyon’s version alot as compared to the other characters I’ve sampled. I think ill just purchase 1 of the volume and that is obviously Kyon’s. Priced at approximately SGD 15 bucks and comes with free shipping to boot, ill just might get it at play-asia.com.

If you want to listen to the song, please click here.

The lyrics are funny and it comes with the English translation, you should check out here.

Hell i think i might just get the entire DVD collection of the series, now that it has been licensed that the DVD volumes are slowly being released.

The first 2 volumes are already out. They even comes with a limited edition series, packed with goodies and a nice packaging, but i think thats an overkill and its a little pricey for me. So ill just be happy with the normal edition one. Both DVDs come with 4 episodes each, in chronological order, as opposed to the TV broadcast. So the episode order is all rearranged to make a smoother flow of the storyline. They also come with lots of extra, including a short making, textless opening and ending, previews, trailers and a couple more. It does come with subtitles and english/japanese option, so the flexibility is there.

The reason why i want to buy this series, is because firstly, its short, totalling just about 14 episodes in total (so that it doesnt burn my wallet collecting!). Secondly, the extras and price is reasonable. Thirdly, Odex plays no part in this. Fourthly, there are extra scenes added to the series, with a number of visual edits not shown in the TV broadcasts. Inconsistencies in the visuals are edited and corrected, so in a sense you get a really good deal in terms of getting a real polished series that the directors all wanted us all to see.

Im getting the following DVDs on Ebay. I found a merchant selling the DVD, factory sealed at a cheaper rate compared to amazon.com, and it offers a fixed flat rate on international shipping. Combine those two prices, and its still cheaper than what amazon’s offering. Furthermore, the feedback from the seller looks really good and i might give it a try. No one can blame me on maximisng bang for buck, especially when it comes to imported products can they?

Blood+’s Saya and Hagi Bust

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on August 19, 2007 by mdjasrie

Its without a doubt that im an anime and manga fan. I just love them so much, and certain series really left a lasting impact on you after watching or reading them. But when it comes to figurines and anime models or busts, im not keen in collecting them at all. Yeah some are really well done and of high quality and ive seen my fair share of them. And thus it is inevitable that it comes at a premium, especially when price is concerned. There are very few that caught my attention, especially when it comes to detail, but there are even fewer that really caught me staring at it for hours on end.

Today, my friend and i went around Singapore, specifically Chinatown and Bugis to look for shops that specialises in this kind of hobby, collecting figurines. I was quite amazed that there were quite a number of them in fact. Whether you are a Star Wars fan or Mecha maniac or Chibi/sexy girl’s collector, you will definitely find many of them around these two areas.

So i went and i came across this marvelous looking piece of work.

This is taken from a magazine featuring the figure that i saw:

The first time i saw this bust, i was blown away. It’s from the anime called Blood+, and it features the sword-wielding Satoshi Saya and half-bodied Hagi as her supporter seen above. The figure was release in June, 2006. Created by Megahouse, under the Excellent Model Series. Now i need to stress this. Im not an avid model collector, but this single piece just sold me, and ill tell you why later. It was priced at a whopping SGD75 and i think this is the single most expensive thing that i have ever spent on a piece of PVC. I may regret buying this because it was partially out of impulse, but owning one is really priceless despite the hefty pricetag. I dunno, but maybe this must be some kind of “rite of passage” for model and figurine collectors, overcoming price barriers.

So i opened the package and here it is, all fully painted, ready for display in all its glory. The figure is about 12cm tall, a 1/8 scale. Its not too big nor too small for me and it features not one characters, but 2. Saya is the dominating piece, followed by the half bodied Hagi supporting her by the thigh, using his bandaged arm. The sword is removable and it has quite an amount of detail to it, especially the inclusion of the groove in the middle of the sword for Saya’s blood to flow through.

Looking from the back and side, you can see the quality of the figure, nicely painted with no bleeding on the other areas, and accurately molded. Colourwise, there is nothing outstanding, however the vibrancy of the colours are there and accurately depicted. The flow of the uniform and skirt is well done, and really catches the iconic moment when she goes for the final blow.

As for Hagi, there is no cutting corners here. Everything from his hair, his outfit and to his flowing bandage cloth from his right hand was wonderfully done. But personally, it was kinda dissapointing to see Hagi in a half a body. If it had been his full form together with Saya, as a duo figure, i think it would have been much more worth it for purchase. But still, Hagi still gets quite a bit of attention in this figure, judging from the his pose with Saya.

So why do i like this figure so much? Well there are a few reasons. Firstly, it’s the character itself. Saya is one of my favaourite female heroes. In the character, she has integrity, honesty and a sense of family values, putting her life before her family members. Though she isnt human, she continually struggle to find a sense of identity for herself and it is her father and 2 siblings that helped her find that.

Secondly, is Hagi’s complete trust and bond towards Saya. He is a protector, guardian, mentor and friend for Saya and I find it really romantic to see such bond between him and her. He always supports and protects Saya, even at the cost of his life. At first glance, you may see him as a reserved, mysterious person, but he is as human as he can be despite what happened to him to make him “inhuman” (as evidenced by the bandaged hand from the figure).

And when you put them together in a figure in such a pose, it really epitomizes their characters. Saya going for the killing blow, in an attempt to save the human race, but more personally her family, and Hagi supporting her as he had always done so many times before. This isnt about a single character, but 2 characters working together and that is why i like so much about this figure. The message is crystal clear and simple. And thus it moved me to think that a figure like that would really carry such a message from within.

Mushishi DVD Box Set… ME WANT!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on August 17, 2007 by mdjasrie

I saw the promotional ad for the dvd release of Mushishi the other day and it reminded me of the series that i recently watched just last month. I must say that series is one of the most refreshing series that i’ve watched in a long time. Slow, but meaningful, artistic, fluid, and very human characters in the Mushishi makes it to my personal favourites of all time.

Unlike most other animes out there, there is no central plot to the series. Most of the episodes are standalone and doesnt contribute to the overall plot. Yet as you watch, it really feels magical. Coupled with an exceptional soundtrack, this title is a true gem. For those who may have watched too many action packed series, violence, gore or “Noisy” titles, Mushishi is bound to give a blow of fresh, cool air when you watch it. It’s like going for a hike into a green forest, away from the urban landscape that you live all these years.

And so Funimation got the rights to distribute the anime into DVD and i was shocked to see the design of the DVD Box set. Someone by the name of Tony K in a forum took shots of the box that he purchased. Its one of the most beautiful and nicely packaged box set to keep future DVD volumes neatly. The design really fits the overall theme of Mushishi and just by looking at the packaging itself sold me into wanting to order it via Amazon. Just look at the gorgeous design below.

The box set allows you to keep future DVD volumes into one neat package. A total 6 volumes would most likely be released, covering the series’s 26 episodes. The box set has a beautiful outer sleeve. When opened, the inner designs of the box is revealed. The individual DVD volumes has an outer sleeve on the outside as well, featuring gorgeous art on possibly the main character or many some significant characters showcased throughout the show. Really really amazing. Such great thought has been put into the design of the box set, unlike !~uhm Odex uhm~! Now that’s what i call a tribute to all the fans out there. (GET THAT ODEX?!?)

As for the pricing itself, Amazon is selling the box set at USD35.99, which roughly translates to SGD50. A little pricey, considering you have to pay about USD10 more just to get the box AND the first volume of the DVD that comes with it. The DVD itself is priced at USD26 or about SGD40. But hey its 5 episodes in the first volume, so i guess its competitive enough. I must get it!! My birthday is coming anyways, September 22 *Hint hint*. hehehe!

______________

Soundtrack

Ive heard the soundtrack before and i think this is one of the few titles that really totally got my attention while watching the series. I love the soundtrack. Composed by Toshio Masuda, whose works also comes up in Naruto and Ghost Hunt. The soundtrack gives a really zen like atmosphere, using traditional string instruments. To describe the soundtrack in one word, i would say, “spiritual” which is really on the dot when composing such a series, a very spiritual series.

Ive put some samples here if you like to listen to them.
