Worry wart

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 29, 2008 by mdjasrie

“When the realities of life crashes down on you, and the carefree days are over.

You are falling.

You need to pick up the pieces quickly, or it will be too late.”

Im a worry wart. I worry alot. Over small things even. Its really distracting me from my work and my outlook in life. Its like a sickness. Sometimes i think too much over small stuff and im so critical at myself at every single thing i do. Its like im pretending that someone is looking at me and evaluating my actions. Its very hard for me to be myself lately.

I dunno if the stress stems from the ‘work’ this past few weeks, but its as if, for a long time, im not satisfied at myself for some reason. im not satisfied at the direction of the life that im leading it towards. Alot of things happened that make me ponder on a lot of things. Suddenly i feel so restricted, so drained and i dont know why.

Gone were the days of being free, being who you are, being who you wanna be without people judging you. just being… comfortable. Perhaps this is what people call LIFE. Im losing track of my principles, my 7 habits that ive practiced previously, my mission statement in life, my goals and stuff. Im losing track of all these. Im directionless at the moment. I need to feel alive again.

Dual monitor test setup

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 29, 2008 by mdjasrie

So i was pondering on what to do with the old LG lcd computer monitor that have been laying waste in the living room. Obviously no one wanted to used it after i upgraded my computer with a 20 inch monitor to boot.

So i decided to plug the old 17 inch monitor to my current computer setup and it looks kinda sweet. Now i have lot of extra workspace i can use for messengers, browsers, and other productivity software, all spread out evenly on 2 monitors. It looks kinda uneven, since one is a 20 inch widescreen and the other is the 17 inch normal screen monitors. Adding to the already cramped computer desk, i had to relocate my Creative Soundworks and my Playstation 3.

I still havent decide if i want to keep this kind of setup permanently. Obviously i would not want to use it all the time. I’ll only use the “backup” monitor if i need to use my computer and ps3 at the same time, or i need more space to work my stuff on. The wiring is still super messy, as well as the front of the desk, riddled with my wallet, phone, watch and notpads strewn about.

Here is a small little teaser:

Martian Skies

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 28, 2008 by mdjasrie

You know, after having played through Mass Effect and with the recent image release of the new Mars Phoenix Lander and its quest to find ice and water, i came across this website.

It showcases some of the most beautiful and stunning images of Mars and its martian skies. After looking through it, i can stop but wonder. What if in 50 or 100 hundred years time, when man is able to colonize Mars and built a small space frontier, is this what its gonna look like when youre in Mars? The barren wasteland full of red sand and rocks and the orange sky fascinates me in a way that this is totally different from the Earth’s sky. Its so surreal that we are now able to look at skies totally different from Earth and gives me a very alien feeling to it.

Some of the images showcases the orange sky, while others have the sun in the sky as well as the night sky, with the earth and moon visible. The latter is very striking. Imagine you are on Mars as part of the group’s pioneer colonist, and you are looking right towards earth, rather than the other way around. Its such a different feeling.

Bioware’s Mass Effect complete!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 22, 2008 by mdjasrie

So i completed Bioware’s latest sci-fi epic RPG, Mass Effect for the PC yesterday and i had a wonderful time playing it for the past 3 weekends. So what do I think about this new franchise that Bioware has created?

To summarize it in one word, i would say: Entertaining. Bioware simply amazes me up till now. From Neverwinter Nights, the first game i played from Bioware, to Mass Effect, Bioware never fails to impress me. Mass Effect is a wonderful game, with highly original sci fi concept that could even be on par with the Star Wars Universe. Ever since I played Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect has taken a step further in many aspects, such as the quality of voice acting, graphics, in game cinematics and raw drama.

What I like:

One of the major improvements that Bioware made in their games is certainly the voice overs. Now Mass Effect features voice overs for the main character that you control. In past games, the dialogue options you choose for a particular response, are not voice acted. In Mass Effect every dialogue has a voice over done. This makes a much for cinematic experience. Also the choices appear just before a dialogue is about to be finished, so the player can choose a response and it would played it out smoothly, just like in the movies when someone is having a conversation.

Graphics are a major step forward from past games that Bioware has created. Lip synching is well done, and you can actually see the emotions and the appropriate facial expression that the character make. Character models are one of the most realistic and detailed i  have ever seen. All in all, its so fluid, so human like and it really pushes the boundary forward to realism.

The sci fi setting is top notch. Its highly original, yet at the same time it doesnt bog you down with too many details about the universe in which you are playing. Although there are lots of information about the sci fi universe that you play, even then, it is highly entertaining to read all the background information. Everything from the planets, to the technology, to the alien species and their culture. I must really give credits to the creative directors, producers and writers who came up with such a detailed universe.

What i dont quite like:

Though the story is epic and full of action and climatic scenes, i felt that this game is considerably shorter than the other RPGs Bioware has created. Thinking back, the central plot is very straightforward and if the player avoids all the side mission, i think the game can be completed real fast. Compared to Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, or even Jade Empire, the different locations and worlds that you travel to throughout the story, is not varied at all.

But all in all, just looking at the story itself, it is still highly entertaining and the standard is still on par with KOTOR or Jade Empire.

Character background is a little shallow as well. Although they do tell their background story, i feel that if more time were spent on this aspect, it would make the characters around you more believable. After having played through the game, i dont really feel connected with most of the characters in the game. Characters in KOTOR are much more interesting than in Mass Effect.

Overall, its a good investment and i look forward to more Bioware’s RPG and Mass Effect’s sequels, currently in the works. Perhaps my expectations were too high on the first installment of Mass Effect and maybe this was just a lengthy introduction to the new universe that Bioware has created. My only hope is that the future installment would improve the shortcomings of the first game.

Y the Last Man Graphic Novel Complete!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 21, 2008 by mdjasrie

After a year of waiting and collecting, the final volume of Y the Last Man graphic novel, Volume 10, has finally hit the shelves. This volume concludes the the epic story of Yorick Brown, the last surviving male, after a mysterious event happened that obliterated the entire male population of the world.

As the story unfolds, he met with several female leads, both out to protect him, as well as kill him. Yorick on the other hand, has only one goal in mind: To reunite with his girlfriend. Along the way, while travelling around the world looking for her, he also uncovered conspiracies and secrets that ultimately lead to the real reason why he is the last surviving male in the world.

I just bought the graphic novel today and i havent started reading yet. Hopefully the ending is a good one. Every volume that i bought always ended with a cliffhanger ending and its kinda frustrating having to wait for a new volume to be released, which usually takes about 3 to 4 months. Its one of the best graphic novel that i have ever read. Its not too long or too short and each storyline arc really fleshes out the characters in the story even more, while at the same time, enticing readers to continue reading while little bits of vital information central to the plot gets released. Anyone, who wants to get into the whole graphic reading scene should really start with Y the Last Man. Easy to read dialogues, plenty of humor and modern day references are made too.

I have pics later on.

My call has been answered

Sometimes, you have no choice but resort to really unconventional methods to really wish for a better life.

The laws of attraction, while i was doubtful at first, is starting to mysteriously work in my favour.

Anyways, alot of things happened this week, and it took turn for the better, which i hope it would maintain it that way for the coming months. Life here is improving bit by bit and im getting used to my new conditions. Now im really grateful for all the things that have happened and all the things that have been granted to me. I shall remind myself daily how grateful i am.

On a sidenote, this quote is starting to make sense:

When im a kid, i have time and energy, but no $$.

When im an adult, i have $$ and energy but not time.

When im old, i have time and $$, but no energy.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is Rock Solid!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 14, 2008 by mdjasrie

I must be ashamed to say this, and im sure Metal Gear fans would come knocking on my door with bats, waiting to smash my face. But here is what i have to say. Metal Gear Solid 4, Guns of the Patriots is the first and only game in the Metal Gear franchise that i have ever had a chance to play. Yep, there, i said it. It must have been blasphemous for someone who may be a hardcore fan and knew someone knew little to nothing about the franchise.

But worry not fans, for you have just gotten a fresh new recruit! Metal Gear Solid 4, is by far the best experience that i have ever gotten from a video game thus far. Everything from the storytelling to the graphics, sound, voiceovers and gameplay, have been meticulously crafted and fine tuned to perfection. From the minute i installed the game to the Act II of the game (so far in the game progress), it still delivers and never fails to impress me by leaps and bounds.

Im still in the middle of the game, and im still enjoying it tremendously. What impresses me is that even im not a fan of these sort of games, tactical espionage genre, with the likes of Splinter Cell, i still consider this game one of the finest. Its that good. We gamers must be lucky to have Hideo Kojima in our generation as the greatest visionary in the video games industry. For those who have yet to play this game, i would highly reccommend you to grab a copy now. If you have yet to get a PS3, this is the perfect time and excuse to get one now. No doubt, this is the first of many great exclusives that PS3 gamers would get to enjoy in the coming year.

What i need to do right now is to continue playing the game while at the same time read up on various articles about the history of the franchise as well as the story so far, leading up to Guns of The Patriots. There is a lot of reading for me to do, because there are still alot of areas in the story from the game that im still confused or unsure about. I hope in time i get to understand them all and at least appreciate the story better in this latest installment.

Mushishi is truly magical…

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 14, 2008 by mdjasrie

You know, with all the talk about mushishi in my blog, i still cant find a suitable way to best describe this outstanding anime nor categorise them in any of the major genres.

Ive watched a lot of animes in the past 4 years and have still numerous backlogs of anime series still waiting to be watched. But when mushishi came, at first i thought it was good in terms of the quality from all aspects. However, upon further analysis, this particular series just gives me the chills. There is no way i could describe it. Its spiritually enlightening, and even that is a gross understatement. Every episode is pure magic, meticulously done in great detail that sometimes you just wonder in awe.

There is no central plot. Every episode tells a different story. It doesnt have much action, nor is this an action anime. It’s calm, soothing and really touches on the human essence when it comes to storytelling. Imagine its morning and you are relaxing by a pond where the water is extremely calm breathing in the fresh morning mist. Everytime i finish an episode, that is what i feel, not just a cool breath of fresh air, but the whole atmosphere of calm and serenity that i experienced. It got me thinking real deep about what i have just watched. Its an amazing rollercoaster of emotions and feelings that i dont get most animes that i have watched.

Just listen to the soundtrack and you would immediately be mesmerized. Ive posted a couple of samples in which i think in my opinion, truly brings out the best in the series.

You can listen to a sample of the soundtrack here and here

Here are the pictures that i promised the other time. Finally, its the set that i can be proud off and its a very good investment.

That’s what friends are for

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 8, 2008 by mdjasrie

Sometimes looking back, and the friends that ive made along the way, i sometimes start to wonder whether ive been giving my friends the well deserve treatment and respect that they ought to get. Its not that i take them for granted in any mean way, rather i feel really appreciative for some of the things that they do for me. The extra mile that they make, the troubles they went for the sake of a friend, have i done that same thing to them when they are in need?

With so little time in my hands ,especially now, it is so difficult to maintain your social life, not forgetting my friends, and truly reflect upon the good times we have spent together over the period of months, or years, depending on who you are spending time with. One of my biggest fear is perhaps losing touch with my friends, and no doing anything about it, due to other commitments, in which you used it as an excuse. Sometimes i do that, and i feel truly terrible.

Right now i need to feel grateful for the time that i spent with my friends. They represent the best moments of my life, no matter how brief they are. To be truly accepted among my peers, i cant wish for anything greater.

Mushishi DVD collection completed!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on June 6, 2008 by mdjasrie

I dont have the pictures to show the entire collection just yet, but suffice to say that i have finally bought all 6 volumes of the DVD and it looks sweet when all of them are placed in the collection box that came with the first volume.

Although the final volume was released months ago, i only managed to get it at a bargain price on ebay. Im very short on cash and any cent counts!! Thankfully the package arrived just fine. Although it tooks a whopping 3 weeks to arrive to my doorstep, at least its cheap.

So whats next after mushishi. I dont think i would be buying Anime dvds at the time being. I already have my investments on manga and games, and those are real money suckers. Id love to have the Blood+ DVD collection though. Im a big fan of Blood+.

Guess ill have to wish for it and hope it falls from the sky and into my hands.
